Blocked ear? What to do before ear wax removal

It is tempting to reach for a cotton bud when your hearing feels muffled. Please do not. Cotton buds can push wax further in and irritate the ear canal. A blocked ear also does not always mean wax, so it is worth having someone look before trying to remove anything.

What ear wax does

Ear wax is normal. It helps protect the ear canal, and most of the time it clears on its own. If it builds up, you could notice muffled hearing, a full feeling or ringing. Those symptoms can have other causes too, so an examination matters.

Before your appointment

  • Do not put cotton buds, fingers or ear candles in your ear.
  • Ask a pharmacist if softening drops are suitable for you before using them.
  • Tell the clinician about ear surgery, a perforated eardrum, infection or recent pain.
  • If you have sudden hearing loss, seek urgent medical advice rather than waiting for a wax appointment.

What is microsuction?

A clinician first checks your ear. If wax is present and removal is appropriate, microsuction uses a small suction device to clear it while the clinician can see inside the canal. It can sound loud, and the clinician will talk you through what is happening. If wax is not the cause, you will need advice on the next step instead.
